Tuning Guide

After several banner years for Doyle Etchells sails in heavier air events at the Worlds and Nationals, the focus now turns back to the light to medium conditions anticipated for Chicago 2008. As Chicago can have lighter and lumpy conditions in June, your sail selection will need to be adjusted accordingly. Our product line has expanded to allow you to tailor your inventory for the conditions that you sail in.

Mainsail Selection:
We currently offer two great mainsails: the DC+ and the AP.  Both now include all radial patches, and the new larger class approved vision and spreader windows.  When ordering either main, it is essential that you provide specific mast deflection information for your mast, so we can cut the luff curve to fit your rig.

DC+ main: For wind speeds 0 - 18 knots, our DC+ main is still the "trim and go solution." This main does not require much backstay, mast blocking and step adjustment as the conditions change, so you can focus on where your are going instead of how you are going.

AP main: For heavier air venues (6 - 25 knots) and newer, stiffer masts, our new AP main will be your best choice. This is a flatter main than the DC+ and sets up on a straighter chocked aft mast tuning.

Jib Selection:
We now offer three jibs: the 6.5 DCM, 6.5 NLM and 7.2 DCH.  All jibs have new Velcro adjustable spectra leech and foot lines as well as all radial corner reinforcing.

6.5 DCM Jib: If you're looking for just one all purpose jib, we recommend the 6.5 oz. DCM Jib with dual luff tabs for wind speeds 6 to 14 knots. It is known  for great pointing ability in smoother sea states and more protected waters.

6.5 NLM Jib: This new jib is great for light to medium wind conditions (3-14 knots) with lumpy seas. It has replaced the DCL jib since it is a better pointing headsail and overlaps the popular DCH jib.

7.2 DCH Jib: For  medium/heavy air, we recommend the new flatter DCH 7.2 jib.  It has excellent pointing capability in all sea states and should be used in wind speeds 12 - 25 knots.

Spinnaker Selection:
Doyle is happy to announce that we now offer four great spinnakers: the Full Radial, AP crosscut, VMG crosscut, and biradial.
All designs are available in either AIRX 500, AIRX 600, Superlite Nylon or Formulon 50.

Full Radial: For pole back and square running conditions we recommend the .5 oz nylon full radial running spinnaker.
AP Cross cut:  This 2004 design is a  fuller sail for pole-forward, choppy  conditions when keeping the kite full can be difficult.
VMG Crosscut: This spinnaker features a flatter sail for improved VMG.  It should be used in pole-back, smooth water conditions. It also projects better than the AP crosscut in light air conditions.
Bi-radial: This sail is the more durable version of the VMG crosscut.
